I see an awful lot of people peddling quick fixes to the pain, suffering, and confusion inherent in life. Rapid routes to transformation, just sign here, credit card at the ready. I have worked with a lot of the potently wealthy – privileged people who have become habitually reliant on their quick minds and high speed internet to provide immediate solutions. The sharp clarity of the coin opens doors and provides an easy exchange – you pay your money, take your choice. When that fails them, they are quick to point and blame something or someone in the world around them.
In the modern era we have become smug and sophisticated. We have become informed, tapped into the hive mind with digital immediacy. We expect our goods delivered next day, our entertainment streamed instantly, and our relationships filtered and organised through social media. It’s easy to block what we don’t want to hear and fill our world with what we do.
For those who can no longer ignore the pains, the anxiety, the crippling self doubt… for those who are ready to do something about their damaging habits, the cries of hurt from their body and heart — I salute you. You have the courage to be aware, to look within, and to make changes to what no longer serves. I want to support you. And I need to tell you – do not kid yourself. There is no magic guru, gym program, new diet or edgy ‘anti-diet’ that will fix you. There is no email coaching program that will turn your life around in 2 weeks or 12. The problem is not that you’ve failed to find the right healer or the most skilled professional. And it is nothing to do with how much money you invest or how little you currently have.
It’s easy to think signing up for a facebook page and a perky stream of positivity affirmations will be the answer. It’s so easy to fall for the carefully worded lead-generation pages that offer free samples and discounts. That make it sound as easy as reading an email each week and chatting to compatriots, all of whom are trying to justify to each other and themselves why they shelled out $1000 for “Life-Empowerment-Upgrade-Revolution(tm)”. Why do people fall for this? Why do we so desperately want the magic bean or the snake oil to work? I will tell you what I think : because secretely we want there to be a trick to life. We are hoping that by some new meditation, dietary exclusion, special exercise, we will find the ingenious shortcut that transforms our life, ideally with minimal effort or responsibility. We want the magic wand.
There is no magic wand. There is however, an abundance of faery gold on offer. It glitters and glimmers for a while, filling your life with wealth and possibility – but the morning will come, and somehow it has all gone to dust.
For real, enduring transformation to happen, you need to pass the first, terrifying Gateway of our modern world. Acceptance of the reality of Time and Mortality, Failure and Imperfection. To claim the need for Patience and Self-Responsibility. A willingness to step off the path of thrill-seeking, pain-numbing,’fix-me-mummy’ children, and on to the road of maturing, individual, fiercely determined and powerful adults.
